Dallas Love Field Announces Terminal Expansion Project
DALLAS — Dallas Love Field Airport officials announced Tuesday a $150 million terminal expansion project designed to accommodate growing passenger traffic and enhance the travel experience for North Texas residents.
The expansion, scheduled to begin in spring 2024 and complete by late 2026, will add four new gates, expand the security checkpoint area, and create additional retail and dining options. The project aims to address capacity constraints that have led to increased wait times during peak travel periods.
"This expansion represents our commitment to serving the Dallas community and meeting the evolving needs of modern air travel," said Airport Director Maria Rodriguez during Tuesday's announcement at the Lemmon Avenue facility. "Love Field has been a cornerstone of Dallas transportation for decades, and this investment ensures we'll continue serving our neighbors effectively for years to come."
The expansion will primarily affect the airport's east side, extending toward the neighborhoods along Mockingbird Lane. Construction will include a two-story addition featuring expanded gate areas on the upper level and enhanced baggage claim facilities below. The project also calls for improved parking structures and better traffic flow for vehicles entering from Northwest Highway.
Local business owner James Thompson, who operates a shuttle service connecting Love Field to downtown Dallas and the Bishop Arts District, expressed optimism about the expansion's economic impact. "More passengers means more business for all of us in the area," Thompson said. "From restaurants on Greenville Avenue to service providers throughout the Love Field corridor, this growth benefits the entire community."
The construction timeline has been carefully planned to minimize disruption to current operations. Airport officials said they've coordinated with local businesses to address concerns about increased construction traffic on nearby streets, including Cedar Springs Road and Inwood Road.
The expansion comes as Love Field has seen steady passenger growth following the lifting of federal flight restrictions in 2014. The airport now serves over 15 million passengers annually, with Southwest Airlines maintaining its largest presence at the facility.
Construction-related activities may temporarily impact parking availability and create additional vehicle traffic in surrounding neighborhoods. Airport officials are working with local service providers, including Faith Auto Glass Dallas, to ensure continued access for businesses serving travelers who may experience minor vehicle damage in crowded parking areas during the construction period.
The project will be funded through a combination of airport revenue bonds and federal aviation grants. No city tax dollars will be used for the expansion, according to airport officials.
Community meetings are scheduled for next month to provide residents and business owners with detailed construction timelines and traffic management plans. The first meeting is set for February 15 at the Bachman Lake Recreation Center, with additional sessions planned for locations in the Preston Center and Park Cities areas.
Love Field currently ranks among the top 30 busiest airports in the United States and serves as a critical economic engine for North Texas, supporting thousands of jobs throughout the Dallas metropolitan area.
